someone tell me how the mentos peice got strung up. that looks like an

easy
take a needle and thread, put the needle through the mentos and pull until
the thread is through the mentos. then just set the mentos in the bottle
opening and screw the top on. then cut the needle off by trimming the
excess string at the cap. done

Can anyone perhaps explain why this works, and what would happen if you
used more mentos? Does it have to be a new bottle?
